The most discerning of my readers may have noticed I’ve had a new do – read on to find out my honest review of the GHD Curve Creative Curl Wand…

Call it quarantine madness or just boredom after 29 years of the same old hair, but either way I decided to take matters (and scissors) into my own hands. Stood in front of the mirror one Sunday morning, I lopped off more than half the length of my hair.

Friends feared it might be a Britney moment, but it wasn’t. I was ready for a change and after an emergency visit to a salon later that day for a tidy-up, I was so glad I’d done it. I love my lob and the newfound spring in my step that has come along with it!

Here’s the thing, though. I’ve always had naturally straight, very fine hair and sod’s law says that – when it comes to hair at least – you will always want the opposite of what you have. I do like my new style when it’s poker straight as it looks quite edgy, but I still pined for beachy waves and glamorous curls – sure in my logic that they would frame my face and generally make me a lot more fabulous.

Hairdressers far and wide curled my hair and some made a lovely job, but it lasted all of about 30 minutes until my silky locks slithered their way back to straight. Straightener curls, hot brushes, pin curls, tongs and wands – you name it, we tried it. My own attempts were slightly longer lived but only because half a can of hair spray was sacrificed each time, and it certainly wouldn’t last a whole evening. I’d been told by stylists that unfortunately the cause of my woes was a combination of super-fine hair and the weight associated with the longer length.

Now that I’d solved the length issue, would I be able to cure my curl conundrum entirely? Would my fine silky lob ever hold the waves I so desperately craved?

I’m pleased to say it would – after finally finding my new partner in crime, the GHD Curve Creative Curl Wand.

I got my first GHD straighteners when I was 13 or 14, and I’ve never had to buy another pair since. I’m 29. That’s damn good value in my book! (n.b. I have heard that more recent GHD products are not quite so long-lived, and at the time of writing a friend of mine’s 6-year-old wand sadly died on a trip away, but my own experience of their products has been great and they do also come with a 2 year manufacturer’s warranty.)

At the higher end of the price spectrum, the GHD Curve Creative Curl wand will set you back £129 in the UK ($199 in the US) and I did wonder if it could really be that much better than the seemingly decent £29.99 wand that I’d been using previously.

In reality, it blew them out of the water.

Upon first inspection, the wand comes in sleek packaging, and includes a styling glove to prevent burns.

The wand itself has a distinctive oval barrel that tapers from 28mm – 23mm for a more natural effect curl. As a shortie this also helps with styling as you don’t run out of length so quickly when wrapping sections around the barrel.

It heats up to what GHD describe as an ‘optimal 185 degrees’, with heat distribution technology that adapts to the hair section – apparently! Each section needs to be held in place for only 5-8 seconds, which is a lot less than the 30 seconds I had to hold my arm up in the air with my old wand!

GHD suggest two curling methods that achieve slightly different results – twist wrapping for beachy waves, and flat wrapping for glamorous, classic curls. I opted for the twist wrapping method as they suggest this will create more volume.

The result? Gorgeous natural curls that stay in place with only a fine mist of curl holding spray, all day and – unbelievably – into the next.

I realise losing a lot of length has helped with this but I’m certain the quality of this wand is equally responsible. What’s more, my curls look healthy and smooth; not frazzled. (See how I keep my hair healthy and smooth in THIS POST).

Conclusion

Apart from being a mouthful to say, as far as I can see the GHD Curve Creative Curl Wand really is a fantastic tool. I thought I had a good curling wand before, but until I had this beauty I didn’t know what good was. For me, GHD are still in a different league when it comes to styling tools and I’m looking forward to lots more curly looks in the future!
